You might remember our story a few months ago about Duff Beer from South Australia (see our story) which was on the market for a short while in the 1990′s but ran into trouble with 20th Century Fox for copyright issues being too close to the Duff Beer as seen on the Simpsons and was removed from shelves. Well some guys down in Mexico have gone one further- not only have they used the Duff name but they have produced beer packaging pretty much exactly the same as Moe serves to Homer, Barney, Carl and Lenny- and the whole town of Springfield for that matter. A guy called Rodrigos Contreras from Guadalajara in Mexico has some how been able to register the Duff trademark (the same as the one used on the Simpsons) and has started up producing Duff. Now Duff was not a registered trademark before this guy came along but Mexican law does have some protection that 20th Century Fox can use if they wish as Mexican Law does recognize the concept of “brand notoriety”, which states that if any brand is well-known by a specific section of the consumers or the industry due to the commercial activities and/or advertisement done by its owners, they have the right to claim the ownership of the trademark. It will be interesting to see what happens to the future of this beer and Contreras for that matter.

Well Homer Simpson isn’t the only one who suffers from the dreaded beer belly, but if you listen to many Australian’s they don’ have a problem. Reports have been released this week that have suggested that many Australian men are in denial of their beer belly. Reports show that only 36% of obese men surveyed in Australia reckon they have a problem with their overhanging gut and haven’t got a weight problem. 34000 adults were surveyed and the results were published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health and it found that men believed they were in much better shape than the women surveyed. Sure beer isn’t the only thing that makes people fat- too many pizzas, kebabs, burgers, donuts, pies and sitting around on the couch all day watching the footy also helps the waistline grow. Men need a little more exercise than going to the fridge and getting another ice cold can. Overweight puts strain on all the organs including the heart, gives you a higher risk of cancer, stroke and bone and muscle damage and penty of other nasty things you want to avoid. So why not make today the day you change your ways! Why not walk down to the pub instead of taking that cab- you might be able to make room for a few more pots with the money you save on the cab fare. (The Simpsons are owned and registered by Twentieth Century Fox.)

I have never really understood the way of Feng Shui until now, probably because I am Australian and this ad made perfect sense, lets face it all you need in your house is a TV for the footy and cricket, a comfy couch, a toilet close by and a fridge full of beer. I remember Homer Simpson was even intelligent enough to come up with that one years ago- although I think he added some pork rind to the mix (must be the American Touch ? ). Anyway this is a ad for the Australian beer everyone drinks except Australians- Fosters Lager, the world is missing out on so many great Carlton and United beers! – enjoy.

Well we all know it as Homer Simpson and his Springfield friends favorite beer but there was actually a real Duff beer sold in Australia a few years back. Whether an original idea or a bit of a rip off from the Fox network smash show it was left to the courts to decide. The product was eventually forced to be taken off the market due to legal action brought against Razorback Beverages Brewery which was from Barton South Australia by Twentieth Century Fox. Today some cans remain in collector’s hands and go for a huge price; it is not uncommon to see them on eBay or other auction sites selling for $500.
