Classe Royale is a premium larger from United Dutch Breweries brewed in Brenda in the Netherlands which is located between Amsterdam and Antwerp. The beer is s a classic pilsner with a 5% alcohol content and as its name suggests is a royal class or premium beer.  The beer is a classic European pilsner with light colour and a malty and somewhat sour taste not unlike that of Stella. There is also a non-alcoholic version of the beverage this has similar looking but silver can. The beer was first brewed in the 1960’s and is sold in about 30 countries around the world.

Today we do another beer we found at a local beer festival which isn’t readily available in our local bottleshops. Usually the only Mexican Beers we see in Australia are Corona, Corona and Corona, and sometimes and more rarely SOL, Tecate, Modelo  Dos Equis. But today we have found a new beer Cerveza Mexicali Beer.  After a bit of research we found that the beer is quiet popular and brewed by Tecate. The beer is a Pilsener style using German brewing techniques and recipes dating back 90 years.  The beer uses row barley malt and Chinook, Mount Hood and Peerless hops to give the beer a semi dry finish. Unlike many of the Mexican Beers lime or lemon are not suggested, this way you can fully appreciate the smooth and delicate flavour- works for me!  We have also seen there is a Special Dark Larger available so we are on the lookout for that.

The brewery dates back to 1848 when it was originally founded by Diedrich Konig and had a few ups and downs until well after the Second World War. It wasn’t really the 1960’s it got back on its feet and was fairly successful with a Jever Export was produced.  Tastes changed a bit in the 1990’s and a Pilsner like the one in our photo became the more popular beer and the Export was dropped.  The Pilsner is a very nice drop and not unlike other German beers in this region in particular Becks. It’s got a fairly light pale straw colour and there is a very noticeable hop refreshing taste and it’s got the traditional fairly heavy head. It’s not one of the normal German Beers you see in the local bottle shop so look out for it as it is well worth a try and another very nice German beer.

A tasty Steam Whistle Pilsner

If you are ever in Toronto make sure you check out Steam Whistle Pilsner it is a great beer- jam packed with the freshest ingredients and none of that nasty preservatives and chemical additives so many of our beers have today. The best place to try it is at the brewery- you can’t get it any fresher than that. Just look for the giant CN Space Needle and you will find the brewery only a short walk towards the bay. The brewery offers tours of their brew house and finishes up with a taste of some freshly poured Steam Whistle, made to an old Czechoslovakian recipe using Canada’s freshest grains. The brewery not only makes one of Canada’s best beers it makes it caring for the environment with recycling and green technologies being a major part of the businesses philosophy. Look out for the beer around Ontario- and don’t forget to visit the brewery when next in Toronto- we did!

Staropramen is a lovely Czech Pilsner which dates back to 1869 from Cmichov in Prague. It has a sweet and citrusy taste and a deep golden color and the traditional white fluffy pilsner head. This beer is brewed using Czech malt, Zatec hops and a special yeast strain all combining to produce a tasty beer with a nice floral hop. Staropramen brewery has had a rich history in the now Czech Republic being established on the left bank of the lovely Vlata River. The beer has been exported for over a century and today is imported into the USA by the Anheuser – Busch Company.
