How many times have you gone into a bar and bought a bottle of beer just by the interesting label or bottle, well imagine the shock of a ordering a $400 beer, well if you ask for Carlsberg Vintage No. 1 that is the price you will have to pay. The Danish company has just released what is believed to be the most expensive beer in the world. It is created at the Jacobsen Home Brewery which is a microbrewery which is a division of Carlsberg. The 0.8 pint bottle sells for 2008 Kroner and is available at only three fairly expensive restaurants in Copenhagen, one of them is Noma Next year the brewery is going to put their beer up, well a Kroner anyway for the 2009 Vintage and then in 2010 it will cost 2010 Kroner. If this is the pricing structure, I think I would like to try one from back in the stone age. As we are in Australia and not Copenhagen we haven’t tried it (and the fact we are too tight) but from all reports the beer has hues in chestnut brown and has, wait for it, a veil of foam that graces the top. It is aged in Swedish wooden casks and has subtle vanilla, fruit and wood flavors. It has a pretty good kick with a 10.5% alcohol content and it is meant to taste nice with cheese, Nordic of course. The 2008 release only consists of 600 bottles, but that’s about $300,000. Now the beauty of this beer once you have drank it you are left with a lovely bottle and some quality artwork. The label is actually hand lithographed and designed by Danish artist Frans Kannike which is meant to have some real value. Perhaps you could put it up on eBay and recoup some of your $400. We did a bit of a search and the next most expensive beer we could find was a Belgian Beer called Vielle Bon Secours it is onsale at a bar in London called Bierodome for just over $1200 a bottle but the bottle holds 15 litres, which works out to be about 12 times cheaper than Carlsberg Vintage No. 1.
