Just up the road from Salzburg there is a little village in upper Austria called Zipf and it is home to one of Austria’s best beers Zipfer. This spicy and somewhat dry beer is brewed to the traditional purity laws of Austria which are a bit different to neighboring Germany. Austrian law mandate only pure ingredients and may contain the addition of rice to the recipe but only to 25% of the grain content. Where the Germans only permit water, wheat, barley, hops and yeast. The beer is a bottom fermented lager and was perfected by brew master Anton Dreher in the 1840′s making it fairly new in European terms. In recent years a lemon variety has been release which is attracting a new audience to the beer.

Stiegal Beer is the beer of Salzburg Austria and has a rich history dating back to about nearly 800 years, the current recipe is belived to date back to 1492 brewed using the same brewing purity laws that many of the German Beers brew to, with only barley, hops and fresh mountain water used. Stiegal make a range of products including a Goldenbrau, a Pils, a leicht, a very tasty Gtielbock and quiet a range of other branded products including soft drinks like the Gaudi range, but outside Austria you will usually just see the one beer labeled Stiegl which is a very refreshing pils style of beer.

Austria make some of Europe’s finest beer and the Kaiser is as the name translated means a King of Beer. This beer is one of Austria’s more popular and comes from the capital Salzburg, the home of the Sound of Music. And lets face it while your high on the hill with your mountain goat and a few tasty grilled bratwurst gulping down a few steins of Kaiser isn’t a bad idea. The beer is a 5.2% strength golden yellow beverage with a malty aftertaste resembling that of an European Pilsner. Unlike the German’s the Austrians do not have purity laws so there are some unmalted cereals like corn and rice used in the process which gives it a distinctly Austrian taste. The beer is exported out of Austria and can be found in limited numbers around the world usually in the aluminum can form.
