We found this fun Bud ad when seaching through You Tube and thought it would be a fun addition to Hoppsy. It features a few mates over for some beers, with a host not unlike a friend of mine, never enough beer to go round. Anyway the host heads for the house to prepare some nachos while Walter looks after his beer. He’s might not be the biggest guard you could find but he sure knows how to protect the precious brew. Enjoy.

Export Gold is one of New Zealand’s most awarded premium beers. Dating back to the 1930’s when the brewery was founded by Sir Kenry Kelliher and Morton W Coutts in the Auckland suburb of Otahuha about 13 km from the city centre. The Export label has had a bit of an identity crisis in recent years, the beer was originally known as DB Export then in the mid 1990’s after winning some awards got Gold added to its name, a few years later the DB was dropped; now we know it as just Export Gold. The beer is now a 4% alcohol vol and a pale ale style. The beer has a malty and hoppy aroma with a slight hint of sweet fruits, its quiet a nice drop. In New Zealand the beer is also available on tap and is specially micro filtered instead of the usual pasteurization used on many beers.

Beach Bum Blond Ale is a seasonal beer from the US brewing giant Anheuser Busch. It was introduced again mid May and will only be available for a the summer period. Being an American Blonde Ale the beer has a slightly hp note and malty flavor and uses a combination of Cascade Hops which come from the Pacific Northwest and German Alsace and Hallertau hops. The beer uses a special dry hopping brewing technique where hops are added to the beer in the aging tank instead of in the brew kettle. This helps give the beer its unique hoppy flavor. The beer has the taste of summer and is a perfect accompanist to bbq, salads and fresh fish, just perfect for this time of the year, in the US anyway. .The beer won an award at the North American Beer awards picking up bronze in the blonde ale category In 2006, so there’s no wonder it has been brought back to market for the summer.

Another Beer Robot Post for you today, this one seems to be at a robotics exhibition and is more of the industrial type robot set up to pour the frothy stuff, he’s pretty good at it too, dipping the glass in water before hand and scraping the head off after with a butter knife (there is generally a 2 bux premium on beers that require this at our local!). Not sure what it is about beer and robots but they seem to go together very well indeed.

Every here and there you get a new beer that is something a bit special, well it looks as if Budweiser has done it with this magnificent ale. If the press kit is right we are in for a treat. The Budweiser American Ale has a robust taste and full bodied with a malty and hoppy taste but not too strong or bitter. The beer is brewed using caramel malted barley which not only gives the beer a sweet malty character but a lovely almost reddish amber glow. The beer has 5.5% alcohol volume and in some parts a 3.2% version is available. The beer uses Cascade hops from the Pacific Northwest and they are dry hopped not added to the kettle like most beers. The beer hits the US market in September with draught being available on the 15th and in packaged forms from the 29th. We would love to hear from anyone who tries it to see if it lives up to the promises.

Bok style beers are popular throughout Europe and like many beer styles date back to Germany but the Dutch sure do know how to brew a fine Bok. One we have found is made by Heineken called Heineken Tarwerbok. Brewed using all natural ingredients this beer features a ram on the label, which is common for a lot of Bok style beers. Some use rams others use goats- we don’t know why. The beer has a 6.5% alcohol volume and gives a good kick, especially on a cold winter’s night. These Bok styles of beers are usually only brewed for the winter market and you can see why because they sure do warm you up. The beer has a strong liquorices and even smoky flavor it is sweet although bitter, the first mouth full is a bit of a challenge but once you get into it you will really enjoy it and go back for more– trust me!. The beer is not a beer you can drink like a normal lager or pilsner, you need to really relax and enjoy it. It goes lovely with some chocolate by the open fire. Look out for a Bok beer next winter.

The 2008 Munich Oktoberfest is only weeks away and one of the big tents everyone will be flocking to is the Hacker Festzelt which can cater for 9300 seated guests in any sitting. The tent is huge and is decked out with clouds and really makes you feel like you are in heaven, especially with a few litres of ice cold Hacker Pschorr beers. The blue skies and clouds with traditional Munich skyline were painted by artist Rudolf Reinstander and are huge, with the tent stretching nearly 100 metres by 45 metres. The centerpiece of the tent features a huge revolving band stand which not only features a traditional Bavarian brass band ‘Die Kirchdorfer’ but ‘Cagey Strings’ which are a more rock n roll style band which will perform each night from 6 pm. The cuisine is just what you need to accompany the best of beer, with chicken and plenty of ox, pork and even duck. The tent specializes in some pretty tasty sausages and some of Oktoberfest’s best platters with hams, cheese, breads and other tasty treats. Remember to book your reservation to the tents well before your visit to avoid disappointment!

Smithwicks pronounced without the ‘W’ is Ireland’s oldest ale dating back to 1710 when it was first brewed at the St Francis Abbey Brewery in Kilkenny Ireland which is Ireland’s oldest brewery and the site of a 14th century abbey. It’s a red style Irish Ale and is now brewed in both Kilkenny and in a higher strength (4.5% instead of 3.8% form) for the exported market in the Irish city of Dundalk in Louth County close to the border of Northern Ireland. The beer has been a popular Irish beer in many markets around the world expecially Canada, but it has only recently been distributed in the USA where Diageo launched it in 2004. It is making major inroads and is fast becoming one of the favorite Irish beers in America especially in New York.
