Skopsko from Macedonia

skopsko

I found a real treat at our local bottleshop today, a Macedonian beer called Skopsko. It’s a 4.9% very European tasting pilsner tasting lager. I have been trying to research this beer, but can not find out too much information other than the Skopsko brewery has been in operation in the Macedonian city of Skopje since 1922 and is now owned by Heineken. Many people regard it as the best of the Macedonian beers, and after tasting it, there would have to be a pretty good one to beat it.. If you have any information on this beer drop us a line in our comments box, and if you see a couple of Skopskos at the local its worth the few dollars to pick them up- you should really enjoy it.

I am from England, but my husband is Macedonian. Since coming to live in Macedonia 1 year ago I think Skopsko Beer comes close to being one of the best beers I have tasted in a very long time. You must try it.

Wilst traveling, I had a small stay over in Macedonia, specifically, Skopje. The first night I was there I just looking for something I know. Amstel jumped out at me. After some small talk with some of the locals, they recommended Skopsko. I would have to say it’s VERY European tasting…but good. I ended up drinking that for the remainder of my stay. Light, not filling beer…went well with lunch an dinner. I’ve never seen it stateside though. If you get the chance, definatly give it a try, at the least, just to say you did.

bryanhollamby.co.ukI am from Macedonia, and i can tell you that SKOPSKO is a real premium beer…face to face with AMSTEL,HEINEKEN,BUDWIESER and other premium beers…In our country,0.33 litres of SKOPSKO is about 1,20 euros…It’s cheap…For example, the AMSTEL is 1,50,the HEINEKEN over 1,50…The taste of SKOPSKO is so good,i can’t describe it,you must taste it first….Very good taste…

-That is correct that Skopsko beewery is not sister company of Heineken Greece….

I’m an American living in Skopje, and I enjoy Skopsko quite often. It’s very “European-tasting” because the brewery and the original recipe actually come from some immigrant Czech brewers who found their way to Macedonia. It comes in small cans, tall boys, small bottles, .5 liter bottles, and big 1.5 L bottles, and there is a definite drop in taste and quality if you’re drinking from anything aside from the glass bottles (or draught).

For a small country, Macedonia also has a few other beers – Zlaten Dab (Golden Oak, in translation) is much lighter and less hoppy than Skopsko, Krali Marko (King Mark) is average as well, and Gorsko is the cheapest of the cheap – people don’t have it on tap, it’s just sold in plastic bottles at shops. Skopsko is, of course, brewed in Skopje, while Zlaten Dab and Krali Marko are brewed in the southern city of Prilep. Both cities have a beer festival each year.

I visit FYROM often an usually drink Skopsko, coming from Ireland and the Guinness tradition it really is pleasant to find a good lager. I lived in Gostivar for a year and drank far to much Skopsko but enjoyed it!!!!!!!

[...] soon and even sooner afterwards I’d placed my order for chilli con carne and a bottle of Skopsko I think I might have over done the super hot habanero sauce judging by the severe burning sensation [...]
