A beer and a bit of J-Pop

YouTube Direct

SharamQ are one of the hottest J-Pop bands in Japan and they feature in this series of Suntory Beer Comercials. Wiht their lead singer Tsunku looking a bit like Adam Ant they belt out the Suntory Jingle. The band  formed in 1988 and ran for a few years then came back due to popular demand in 2006 and have continued to today.  They have had a string of hits but our favorite is Shin R?men Daisuki Koike-san no Uta – which translated is about about Koike who likes Noodles- again only in Japan.

Like a virgin – organic and low carb

Virgin Blonde Beer was introduced onto the Australian market a few months ago and is the first of what is hoped to be a range of beers by …… using organic products with no nasty chemicals or synthetic products. This tasty blonde dosen even have extra sugar added to the brew it uses just barley, yeast, New Zealand grown hops and water- Nothing else.  Brewed by the Steel River Brewery in Mayfield, New South Wales, which is near Newcastle north of Sydney. This beer contains 4.0% alcohol volume and is very refreshing and lets not forget dosent’ contain any of those nasties so many other beers contain with all the big words like Polyvinylpolypyrrolidinone or Rhoiso-alpha acids or Di-Ammonium Phosphate – their names alone are bad for you.

Beer Vending Machines

YouTube Direct

Beer vending machines in the street- well it could only be in Japan. Although not as common as soda or icecream vending machines Japan has Beer vending machines. Many of them are easily accessible on street corners, you just put in your Yen select which beer you would like and presto- a can of beer, you can even purchase your favorite smokes in an adjoining machine how convenient is that.  Minors don’t touch them as there’s a sign on them saying you have to be 18 to purchase grog- a wonderful deterrent, which some how seems to work.

Cuba ’59 – su australiano

The Cuban Revolution started in January 1st 1959 when the US backed dictator Fulgencio Batista was overthrown and later taken over by Fidel Castro who has hung on to power until recently passing power to his brother. Well, with the history lesson aside its time to talk about Cuba 59 the beer. Well this beer’s label and price might make you think it is a genuine  Cuban Beer, but  infact it is brewed in Australia by Australian Independent Brewers who make a wide range of quality beers including Haagen Australian Lager and Platinum Blonde to name a few.  The beer plays tribute to the beers of Cuba with a crisp clean palette with a touch of malt and a bit of citrus aftertaste. The beer is fairly light and not unlike many of the Mexican beers like Sol or even Tegate.  Being an extra dry the beer is a good summer beer and with some clever marketing underway should do well next summer.

Glacier Fresh – Kokanee beer

Canada is known for some pretty good beers and Kokanee is no exeption. Its light golden nectar is very flavorsome and packs a 5.0% alcohol volume. Named after the Sockeye Salmon the beer is made from glacier fresh water at the Columbia Brewery in Creston, British Columbia, which has been owned by Labatt since 1974, their beers date back to 1898 and is pretty much the most popular beer in Western Canada.  The beer can be found oustide Canada and is fairly distinctive in the fridge with a white and blue lable feauturing Grays Peak with the infamous Sasquatch ontop of the peak.  Kokanee have one of the flashest beer websites we have seen for a while  www.kokaneebeer.ca – well worth checking out.

Catch a Richmond Tiger….while you can!

Recently Australia’s Carlton & United released a limited run of 5000 slabs of Richmond Lager. The lager is one of the heritage brands they are bringing back in limited editions.  The beer has a 4.5% alcohol volume and has a good hoppy flavor with a slight bitterness similar to VB one of the breweries more popular brands.  The original Richmond Lager was produced by the Richmond NS Brewing Company which dissapeard in 1962 to become part of the CUB group of companies after the death of Grant Hay who owned the brewery and about a 6% share of the Victorian beer market.  The original brewery was located in Church Street Richmond one of the inner suburbs of Melbourne. Reports show that when the brewery was closed down by CUB in April of 62 the workers were treated to half an hour’s free beer at the brewery owned Prince Alfred Hotel in Church Street as a parting gift- barely enough to drown their sorrows.  Richmond NS Brewing was known for using only natural ingredients with no flavoring or perservatives. – Do some hunting and look for a the Richmond Tiger next time you are at the bottleshop- before it becomes extinct again.

The Beers Cheers

YouTube Direct

Thought we feature another cleaver beer ad today this time from Thailand’s Cheers Beer. Cheers Beer is made by Thai Asia Pacific Brewery, a fairly young brewer, the company also produce Tiger and Heineken for the some parts of Asia and have produced Cheers since 2005. We haven’t tried Cheers yet but we have had conflicting reports of its taste. It seems there are just as many people who love it as there are who hate it, if your sucking one down now let us know what you think below. Read the rest of this entry »

When you are having more than one

YouTube Direct

This funky 1970′s ad above is a real classic and is for the Schaefer Brewing Company. Schaefer was founded in New York in 1842 and went on to become the longest operating brewery in New York City. The company was finally purchased by Detroit’s Stroh Brewery Company who continued to produce the Schaefer brand. Most of Stroh’s brands was eventually purchased by Milwaukee based Pabst Brewery in 1999. Allegedly the brand is still produced by Papst today although I don’t remember any evidence of it when I was around that region late last year. If you are drinking a Schaefer now let us know on the comment form below. Read the rest of this entry »

Pure Water Pure Genius

YouTube Direct

This is one of the best beer ads we have seen for a while. Its advertising the beautiful Boags Draught from Tasmania Australia. Tasmania has some of the most pristine waters and wilderness in the world, im not sure this hole is one of them though, and im pretty sure its not the one they use to make their beautiful crystal clear beers, we believe it was shot near Norfolk to the west of Devonport.  Sit back and enjoy, the soundtrack is pretty cool to it is sung by a guy called Elliot Wheeler. Look out for the giant teddy bear on the car roof. Read the rest of this entry »

A brief history of the American beer industry

YouTube Direct

We found this great short video on youtube that describes the history of beer brewing in America. The video is far more interesting than some of the watery brews put out by America’s big two brewers, and also highlights that there are some good brews in the US thanks to the rise of the many micro breweries making inroads to the US market. We also agree with what the guy suggests at the end of the vid, go out taste, experience and live beer. Read the rest of this entry »
