Tomato Beer- from Japan- where else!

By Rocky | February 9, 2008

tomato-beer.gif

Well as you read yesterday we have a real treat today from the Echigo beer company in Japan- Tomato flavored beer. It’s probably not the weirdest beer in Japan, considering they have some very strange flavoring in some of their other foods, like squid and octopus ice-cream and cuttlefish flavored chips. We couldn’t get too much detail on the Tomato Bibere as Echigo’s site is in Japanese but with a clever conversion we found that the beer matched Hodoyoku tomato flavors and was a beer with healthy appeal using liquor and organic tomatoes. The beer seems to act as an antioxidant and has plenty of vitamin E, more than 1000 times that of regular beer. The 330 ml bottle sells for 420 Yen which isn’t cheap considering the average beer in Japan is half that. If you have tasted the tomato beer or any other strange brew would you drop us a line and we will tell our other readers.

A pink pussy to match your beer

By Rocky | February 8, 2008

YouTube Direct

We are not 100% sure if this stuff is beer, but the ad is too good to not use it. It’s another amazing ad from Japan. It looks as if their beer called ‘Be’ is available in different colors, there’s pink, green and blue so what better to advertise it than three kittens dyed the same colour playing a piano. The advertising people in Japan must have been on on some interesting drugs when coming up with this one. Bolt yourself to your chair (as you will fall off laughing) and enjoy.

The ad is awful, and the beer, well its a shandy

By Rocky | February 4, 2008

YouTube Direct

We have found something awful here its a ad for Green Sands Shandy and from what we can find out is a Bintang product which is a low alcohol beer laced with lime. But it’s not the beer you need to experience its the dreadful 1980’s French ad we have for you today. It is so bad, you will want to play it again. It’s got all the 80’s French erotica stereotypes and a soundtrack to match, with plenty of pastel colours, neon and over tanned, over oiled bodies. It’s enough to make you want a beer!

Reijyou All Malt Beer Super Premium

By Rocky | January 30, 2008

reijyou-beer.gif

Japan changed their beer tax laws in the early 1990’s which then allowed smaller breweries to start up and Echigo Breweries was one of them starting in 1993. Today they make a fine range of products including today’s beer the Reijyou Pilsner. It’s a 5% all malt beer with a refreshing hoppsy flavour. Like many Japanese beers it has a light but fairly frothy head and a strong aroma, which is actually stronger than it’s taste. It is not readily available outside Japan but many Japanese and Asian supermarkets stock it. It is well worth a try and an alternative to the mainstream Japanese beer products which have taken a strong hold on the market, and any beer company which has a goat on it’s logo must be good!

Come back tommorow and we have a story about a $400 beer!

333 From Vietnam

By Rocky | January 14, 2008

333.gif

The 333 or Ba Ba Ba as the Vietnamese pronounce it is a very popular rice lager which is sold around South East Asia and even exported as far away as France, the USA and Australia.   The beer dates back over 100 years to 1893 and was originally called 33 but during the 1970’s the extra 3 was added to its name.  The beer is produced by Beer Saigon and they have a job which there must be a line the length of Ho Chi Minh City to apply, they have a beer taster who samples each batch to make sure it meets the company’s higest standards. Vietnam makes some good beers, and dosen’t use a lot of the preservative chemicals used in a lot of the other Asian beers, making it much crisper and easer on the head the next morning. The beer has a 5.3 percent alcohol reading so it gives quiet a kick, expecially in the hot Vietnamese sun.

A few free beers and a look around

By Rocky | January 12, 2008

asahi-brewery-nagoya.gif

What could be a better day out than a few freshly brewed free beers and a look around a brewery? At Ashahi Breweries in Nagoya Japan they are offering this great adventure. Tours are conducted in Japanese and also English. The tour is quiet an eye opener, with the brewery being one of the most modern around. The equipment is very high tech and the fermenting tanks are monstrous.  You get a really good understanding of how beer is produced and packaged over about 90 minutes, before ending up at the best bit the tasting room for a few free samples and the odd seafood cracker- delicious.  You can stay a little longer and have lunch and pay for a few extra beers if you wish. If you are really nice to the friendly customer relations people they might even send an extra free on your way if things are not very busy. Read the rest of this entry »

Tsing Tao Beer from China

By Rocky | January 10, 2008

tsingtao-beer.gif

We couldn’t help ourselves when we did the artwork to this and had to add a cute little Chinese character. Well the eyes will be on China and especially Beijing this year with what promises to be the biggest and most spectacular Olympic Games in History, who knows Sydney might end up loosing the crown for the ‘Best Olympics Ever’. Well rest assured the marketing teams will be working hard to put even more Chinese products and my guess beer will be no exception. The biggest Chinese beer outside China would have to be the crisp and refreshing Tsing Tao and with a new bottle and label it has made the first step of trying to become the beer of 2008. Time will tell but the Chinese sure are dominating with everything else we buy- can they conquer the beer market. Time will tell. Anyway stock up on a few bottles and prepare for the Olympic spectacular.

Thai-rific Singha

By Rocky | December 29, 2007

singha-beer.gif

There is no better accompaniment to a Pad Thai noodle dish than a refreshing bottle of ice cold Singha. Its rich barley malt flavor and strong hops character make it the world’s most popular Thai beer. The beer is easily identified in any bottleshop with the lovely golden Thai lion on the label. Singha dates back to the 1930’s and today is still owned by the Bhirom Bhakdi family who are in the 4th Generation of ownership. They have 3 breweries and 6 factories in Thailand, which includes the country’s largest brewery. Singha is exported to nearly 40 countries and is huge in the UK where it has been available since 1976. Recently the brewery has started producing a Singha Light which has a 3.5% alcohol content.

Kingfisher brewed in copper urns

By Rocky | December 28, 2007

kingfisher.gif

During the reign of the British Empire into colonial India the occupying troops demanded top quality beer, and fair enough, life is too short to drink crap beer!. So in 1857 Kingfisher was born using quality methods using crystal clear waters, delicate grain malts and fine hops all brewed together in specially prepared copper urns. Today the beer is just as good and still brewed in the traditional manner. The brewing of Kingfisher is a slow and quality controlled process taking 8 weeks to larger, its no wonder they keep winning international beer awards. It has become a favorite around the world and is the no 1 selling Indian lager, in the UK alone it is sold at over 7000 licensed outlets. Although it is a great beer with just about anything it is absolutely delicious served ice cold with a tasty Indian curry or other spicy dish.

Wassabi….

By Rocky | December 23, 2007

YouTube Direct

We know, we have come to the end of our Japanese Beer Ads week- We have enjoyed them so much, and we think we will do another week of them sometime in the New Year. For our last day we have found a real treat, and to be fair it’s not really Japanese, it’s for Budweiser. You should get a laugh out of it, its based in a Japanese restaurant and the fun is all around the pronunciation of Wassabi the hot horse radish sauce so popular in Japanese cuisine.
