By Rocky | April 3, 2008
Flying Horse Royal Lager Beer is India’s finest and is often called the champagne of beers it has a crisp clean taste using superior malts, aromatic hops making this beer very refreshing on a hot day. The beer is best served a little colder than usual and is fantastic with spicy food especially your favorite Indian curries and chutneys. The beer is pale golden with a slight has and you has a very sweet and nearly herby taste with a slight bitterness if not sourish finish. It is brewed very similar to German beers being Rheinheitsgebot pure, and has a similar taste and appearance. A very pleasant beer indeed and well worth a try.

By Rocky | April 1, 2008

The Kiuchi Brewery in Japan is known for top quality top fermented ales and sake and is starting to make some major inroads into the boutique beer market in New York. Many top quality bars and restaurants in Manhattan are serving this gold glass beer to their customers who just can’t get enough of it. The brewery has been brewing since 1823 and they became Japan’s first microbrewery in 1996. They have a wonderful suite of products including Red Rice Ale which uses polished rice just like they use in their sake. The Nest Beer as pictured is the most sort after, with it’s little South Park like owl on the label. Only 2000 cases of this beer are produced each year and it is highly prized. If you are in New York and would like to try this great beer one place which stocks it is a seafood restaurant called the Fatty Crab which is on Hudson Street in Manhattan.

BILK - Beer with milk
By Rocky | March 25, 2008

Yes your right its from Japan, where else! This ‘tasty’ mix is 30% milk and 70% beer and was the answer to the oversupply of milk in Hokkaido Japan. The beer is made by the Abashiri Brewery which is from the northern island of Hokkaido and is brewed pretty much the same way as normal beer and it even contains hops. The Bilk looks like beer with a soft golden colour but has a distinct milky smell. Like a lot of Japanese beers the beer is low malt and tastes a bit fruit, even a bit like tea. The milk is boiled then hops and yeast is added then left to ferment just like normal beer. Bilk is selling for about 380 yen in stores which is about $4, but is currently only being sold in a few outlets around Nakashibetsu. Who knows it might catch on and we all might be drinking it soon….Can’t wait!

A beer from Taiwan
By Rocky | February 24, 2008

When you think of Asian beers you usually think of the popular Japanese Beers or even China’s Tsingtao but Taiwanese beer should also be on your shopping list, they make a really good drop and it has won some very presteigious awards. The beer is brewed by Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation and starting in Taipei just after the Second World War Tawan Beer is a 4.5% pilsener style beer which has a German taste. They are exported and the bright green bottles can be found in plenty of places around the world, so try your local bottle shop. Recently the beer won medals in both London and Brussels beer awards against some pretty stiff competiton. Locally the beer makes up nearly 80% of Taiwan’s 1.3 billion dollar beer market.

Another fun Japanese beer ad
By Rocky | February 22, 2008
We haven’t done a Japanese beer ad for a while and thought it was about time. This one is a sort of cute one advertising on of Asha’s new Happoshu products, which is a low malt beer like product which is produced to avoid a few of the beer taxes imposed on higher malt products. The ad features Konishi Manami who is a famous actress in Japan she has featured in quiet a few movies and just about every Japanese television drama there is. You should enjoy the happy little jingle which goes with the ad.

The official state beer of China
By Rocky | February 16, 2008

Yanjing Beer Co Ltd is based in Beijing and is the largest brewer in Asia employing over 20,0000 employees. The company produces over 3.1 million litres of beer alone and are one of the major sponsors of this years Olympic Games so expect the name to be well know by the end of the games in August. The beer is quiet popular throughout the world but Tsingtao is usually the most stocked of the Chinese beers. Nether less the Yanjing is a good beer with a smooth malty taste with a touch of honey and hops. As you would expect it goes well with spicy Asian dishes and is best served a little colder than the average beer. It takes a bit of the sweetness off the taste. The new clear bottles have been specially treated to prevent ultra violet damage from the sun, but like all light colored bottles they are best kept in the dark. So next time you are out for some yum cha or sweet and sour chicken ask for a Yanjing you wont be disappointed.
