Fosters Lager- Australians aren’t keen on it!

Think Australian beer and you automatically think Fosters, well not in Australia. Aussies really don’t care too much for the stuff. In Australia the most popular beer would have to be VB or even Carlton Draught, both made by the same company which makes Fosters. Fosters isn’t really sold in draft form in Australia, like it is in the UK or other places in the world it is really only seen in package form and not too often. You will rarely see it next to the Barbie of shrimps- in fact you won’t even see the shrimps! – the usual Aussie BBQ consists of steaks, sausages and burgers and the odd chicken wing all washed down with a nice cold VB, XXXX, Tooheys or Carlton- enough to make your mouth water hey!

40 or so years ago when I was just a lad this was the stuff you’d buy if you were unlucky enough to find yourself in Victoria or southern NSW. Not on tap, though, Carlton Draught had that all sewn up, and a nice drop it was too. Melbourne beer was always reputed to be stronger than Sydney beer, and I tend to believe it. Fosters tried to expand but being little better than dishwater suffered a cruel fate. Even Victorians would not be seen dead drinking the stuff these days.

What are shrimps by the way?
