Carlton & United Clydesdales

carlton-horses.gif

Back before cars, trucks and rail transport in Australia the beautiful Clydesdale was a familiar site working on the land and delivering goods around the towns. They were also used to transport beer from the breweries to the pub. Carlton and United Breweries in Melbourne used Clydesdales from 1864 until just after the Second World War and today still have a magnificent troop of these beautiful horses for marketing purposes which are loved by young and old. Their familiar clip clop and silky boots have become ledged and they are now proudly the symbol of Carlton Draught Australia’s favorite draught beer. The carriage is also protected by a Dalmatian dog who has developed a special relationship with the horses and he sits proudly upon the barrels. This is also part of tradition. There are 10 horses in all, and they take turns of pulling the beer wagon. The horses are always dressed for the occasion in lovely silk beer rugs and silver beer badges. The horses travel Australia visiting many agricultural shows, parades and of course the local pub Today’s photo shows us beautiful horses and carriage in the Pako Festa a multicultural street parade in Geelong Australia.

Two generations of my ancestors breed clydesdale horses for Carlton and United. Do you know what year the photo of the horses in the above picture was taken?

    Gday Doris

the horses were taken at the Pako Festa in Geelong, I cant remember if it was 2009 or 2008, they usually appear in the festival most years. The next Pako Festa is February 27 I am not sure if they will be there this year but it is a great day.

As an avid admirer of your teams of Clydesdales, I was hoping there may be some promotional material or photos or anything else that could be sent to me for purchase that I can also use in a college assignment I am doing.

    Kind Regards,
    Caroline

Hi retired as a jockey, I wore your carlton track gear the whole time. I had a bad fall and recently had surgery including total hip replacement! I met a great man who helped me through and he asked me to marry him. My dream is to turn up with dad and your your horses????????????

Our Riding for Disabled Group are looking for a small clydesdale to use for some of our bigger riders.
As it is a volunteer organisation low cost is paramount.
Perhaps a lease arrangement could be possible.
Preference would be for an older animal who was used to a saddle.
The group would treat it like their own horses so it would be in very good hands.
